Dr Dirk Wildemeersch

Dr. Dirk Wildemeersch is the inventor of the "frameless" IUD, GyneFix® and developer of the GynePlant™, FibroPlant™ and other novel “frameless” and “framed” intrauterine drug delivery systems.

He completed his medical training at the University of Ghent, Belgium, and graduated in gynecology in 1976. His research and development activities started in 1985, after 10 years of busy gynecological and obstetrical practice. Since that time, he has devoted a substantial part of his time to the clinical development of new IUD concepts and intrauterine drug delivery systems, originally in collaboration with a group of gynecologists working at the University of Ghent, Belgium, under the name IUD-group which later became the International Study Group on Intrauterine Drug Delivery.

Experienced in intrauterine contraception since more than 25 years, the group's members studied intrauterine devices in collaboration with organizations, drug companies and individual researchers.

Under his supervision, a research organization, Contrel, was established to manage clinical research and to continue to develop and study innovative drug delivery technologies, aimed at finding improved methods for the prevention and treatment of gynecological conditions, improvements to birth control methods, with higher levels of safety, user acceptability, compliance and better quality of life for women.

Over the years he acquired substantial expertise in IUD research and controlled release of bioactive drug substances.  His main topics of interest are contraception, and intrauterine drug delivery for the treatment of menorrhagia and other gynecological conditions including postmenopausal treatment.
